Event Photography: Nelson International Mural Festival

NIMF2019-4When I first started honing my photography craft a couple decades ago, I spent a lot of time photographing events, particularly music because I love the energy and opportunity for interesting light. This led into photographing weddings when I wanted more connection with people. I expanded on my wedding photography when I realized how documentary photography could make more meaningful images for my clients. And now, with event photography for the Nelson International Mural Festival, my work has come full circle!

Documentary photography is really at the heart of my work. This “candid” approach lets people be themselves, which is essential if you want authentic business photos. Oftentimes, business photography looks stiff and posed, which doesn’t give the viewer a sense of who you really are. And if you want someone to choose your business or want someone else to come to your event, you need commercial photos that are interesting, creative and real.

For the event photography of Nelson International Mural Festival, we wanted to give a sense of what the city of Nelson felt like. It’s a heritage town with a strong contingent of artists. The art community is widely supported, and it’s what makes Nelson particularly unique. But it’s actually quite a small city and it was a big deal that we can have international artists come to Nelson to paint our walls!

It was also really important to show the history of First Nations’ presence in the area. Their dances set the stage for the mural celebration, and artists that followed were diverse and celebrated diversity and inclusion.

I’ve done a lot of work for the Nelson and District Arts Council but this festival feels particularly important. NIMF celebrates public art on a grand, unavoidable scale, building awareness and respect for what artists bring to communities. I was particularly honoured they trusted me to capture the essence of their brand: celebration, diversity, respect, community.
